Full disclosure: I had my first viewing of this last week but, unfortunately, chose to watch it while working my full-time job. I knew I was probably ruining my viewing experience by glancing away, doing work, and frequently pausing/unpausing. So initially, I was pretty bored by the movie, but I was fully willing to admit how I watched this movie probably didn't give the film its due shake. I told myself, "Watch it again with no distractions before you write a review," which I did without further ado...
The Gorge (2025) stands out in the sci-fi horror genre, seamlessly blending romance, psychological tension, and supernatural terror. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson, blends a story of love and survival against an eerie backdrop of isolation and mystery. With Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead roles, the film benefits immensely from their believable chemistry, helping to elevate the narrative's emotional core. Rather than rushing into its horror elements, The Gorge takes its time to develop the protagonists' relationship, making the inevitable chaos a bit more jarring.
The film crafts an unsettling atmosphere driven by a lack of information, eerie landscapes, and a growing sense of doom. Sigourney Weaver delivers a standout antagonist performance.
One of the film's most impressive aspects is its ability to shift between genres without feeling disjointed. The romance between the leads is heartfelt and authentic, making their shared struggles more compelling. Meanwhile, the sci-fi horror elements creep in gradually, delivering both psychological and visceral scares. Clever transitions keep the pacing engaging, though a few plot holes emerge—perhaps intentionally or perhaps as oversights. Regardless, these ambiguities only add to the film’s unsettling charm.
Ultimately, The Gorge is a satisfactory genre hybrid that rewards patient viewers. Its strong performances, eerie atmosphere, strong Trent Reznor score, and seamless blending of romance/mystery/political intrigue are worth the enjoyment of streaming from home.
