Review: Does 'Flight Risk' crash and burn? And how good is Steven Soderbergh's horror debut, 'Presence'?

Bald Mark Wahlberg is handcuffed inside a plane
Just think, Mark Wahlberg's bald cap wasn't the worst thing about this movie.

Flight Risk struggles to land, leaving a trail of disappointment.  I might be among the few who think Mark Wahlberg can shine with the proper script and director. Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Adam McKay are a few that pop into mind, with ‘The Departed,’ ‘Boogie Nights,’ and ‘The Other Guys’ as a few examples.  Add Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery, and one might think, “Ok, this might be fairly decent.” But within the movie's first three minutes, the most god-awful CGI moose appears and continues to find new lows as each minute ticks. The writing in this movie is poor.  Scratch that; the writing is horrible. Mark Wahlberg’s character talks about sexual assault so much that it almost becomes more distracting than the ridiculous bald cap he wears.  Do the action scenes distract from the poor script?  Nope, the fighting is limited and happens in spurts. There isn’t anything to keep one captivated, not even the quick 90-minute runtime. It’s an hour and a half that you’ll never get back, a disappointing waste of potential.

My take of Flight Risk

A family is standing in front of a house
Steven Soderbergh's first attempt at horror in 'Presence'

I must admit, I read about ‘Presence’ before watching it and wasn’t sure how it’d turn out. But hey, it surprised me in a good way. It’s tricky to talk about this movie without giving away what ‘Presence’ is all about, so if you want to stay in the dark, stop reading NOW.

If you’re still here, you don’t mind knowing it’s about a haunted house with a presence. The whole movie is shot from the spirit’s point of view. The actors have some pretty basic lines because it’s about an average family dealing with many issues simultaneously. It’s not scary—no jump scares in this pretty tame horror flick—but seeing things from the ghost’s perspective is cool. This fresh angle makes 'Presence' stand out from other horror movies. Unfortunately, the bland dialogue and acting sometimes make the 90 minutes feel a bit slow. Still, Soderbergh did a decent job for his first horror movie.
